Research, development & innovation in Farm animal breeding

The success of the European farm animal breeding and reproduction sector is due to continuous investments in research and innovation. Investments in the breeding sector will contribute to improvement of the total animal production chain. Excellent universities and research institutes fostered the dissemination of knowledge to farmer and individual breeder level. The exploited knowledge covers a wide range of subjects, such as genetics, genomics, genomics, physiology, reproduction, statistics, computing science, economics, animal husbandry, storage, analysis of (large) datasets, and efficient infrastructure design. The aim is to achieve higher production levels and better product quality while improving animal health, reproduction, other physiological characteristics, and/or feed efficiency.

Despite the small margins in the sector, investments in R&D count up to 15% of total turnover.

In the farm animal breeding sector are several projects running that are related to farm animal breeding. More information on these projects can be found here.
