farm animal breeding & reproduction in Europe

Europe has a leading role in animal breeding and reproduction; this is determined by its highly scientific and technological breeding industry. Furthermore, it ensures the high value of Europe's products. Many European breeds are used globally and European farmers and breeding organisations are major players on the global market.

The farm animal breeding and reproduction sector is globally very competitive with low margins. Cooperation between European breeding organisations improves the competitive position of the European breeding industry in the world.

Research and innovation contributes to maintaining the leading role Europe has and gives new opportunities to increase sustainability, improve animal health and welfare, and improve viability.
The whole animal agriculture and aquaculture sector is divided in distinct activities and focuses: nutrition, waste management, food science applied to animal products, animal welfare, animal management, and animal breeding and reproduction. To strengthen the sector and prepare it for the future a higher level of integration is necessary.
"European success is contributed by universities and research institutes fostering the dissemination of knowledge"

Breeding in the animal production sector
The whole animal agriculture and aquaculture sector is divided in distinct activities and focuses: nutrition, waste management, food science applied to animal products, animal welfare, animal management, and animal breeding and reproduction. To strengthen the sector and prepare it for the future a higher level of integration is necessary. FABRE-TP therefore works closely together with other ETPs and is a member of the Animal Task Force.

The drive in Europe’s breeding cannot be only production efficiency; production level, animal physiology (welfare, behaviour, health, reproduction), and population fitness are necessary to balance in defining breeding objectives. Read more about breeding for sustainable animal production.

Organisation of farm animal breeding in Europe
