Aquaculture
Aquaculture breeding is a developing sector - the oldest breeding programmes have been running for 10 or less generations. This sector has only targeted limited species of freshwater fish - trout, carp and salmon - and marine species - bass, bream, cod and halibut-. No species in molluscs are targeted. There is great diversity between the species regarding development.
Genetic improvement is based on the development of large selective breeding programmes using genealogic performances (mostly by multinationals or big companies) and on the development of smaller scale selective programmes, more adapted to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), using individual selection and in some cases fingerprinting to allow genealogical reproduction. The traits currently of interests relate to growth and processing yields including fat content, disease resistance, spawning season, age at maturation and body shape.
