EADGENE_S Workpackage descriptions
WP1: Joint coordination of research activities
WP1 objective is to coordinate research programme implementation among the EADGENE_S partners. It will enable a stronger integration between key European animal genomics and health research organisations to efficiently cope with new research needs.
WP1 will implement multidisciplinary projects in the Animal Genomics & Animal Health area and attract funding for the financial viability of EADGENE ERG.
This includes:
- Identifying existing and future needs.
- Prioritising recommendations and coordinating EADGENE_S members planning for animal genomics and infectious
disease, particularly on host-pathogen interactions, according to society and industry needs.
- Maintaining, consolidating and further developing high quality common research projects on animal genomics and
health in Europe.
- Providing for sustainable funding for the EADGENE ERG
These objectives will be fulfilled under the framework of the European Research Group EADGENE (EADGENE ERG), a co-operation instrument comprised of the EADGENE_S members as represented by their respective participating research departments.
WP2: Development and sharing of common research tools and platforms
WP2 objective is to develop, harmonise and update the virtual and physical resources, tools and platforms (databases, biological resources, facilities, analytical tools, common research methods, common analytical methods, standards etc.), needed to conduct future research in the field of animal genomics and animal health, with particular attention paid to High Throughput Sequencing (HST) technologies and methods to analyse genome-wide data. This includes structural and functional genomics, the bioinformatic and analytical tools necessary to interrogate the obtained data, and the experimental facilities necessary to generate e.g. the animal phenotypes and the genomic data. Updating of existing resources and approaches will be implemented to meet the needs of a future transnational research projects on animal genomics and animal health, accounting for the rapid rate of change in current state-of-the-art and technologies.
WP3: Joint research training, workshops and mobility
WP3 objectives are to:
WP4: Communication and technology exchange
WP4 objectives are to:
WP5: Project coordination and overall management
The overall coordination will be the responsibility of INRA who will:
The responsibilities of the Coordinator, the Governing Council, the Executive Committee and the Project Manager are described in Section B2.1 which also describes the project management structure and procedures. The overall management plan designed by this project is aimed at achieving four main objectives:

WP3: Joint research training, workshops and mobility
WP3 objectives are to:
- Train researchers and other key staff to be conversant with the theoretical and experimental approaches for the range of disciplines represented in the Network.
- Increase the critical mass of skilled scientists and technicians in the area of genomics, and host-pathogen interactions and in the underpinning technologies.
- Establish a higher level of standardisation of methodologies related to the EADGENE_S areas of interest and to define best practices for research approaches and methods for analysis.
- Implement a programme for the exchange and dissemination of resources, materials and information between EADGENE_S members and between academic laboratories and commercial companies to achieve transfer and exploitation of this technology in the commercial sector.
WP4: Communication and technology exchange
WP4 objectives are to:
- Ensure the take up of EADGENE findings by the industry, the research community, and policy makers, to improve innovation and knowledge transfer throughout Europe.
- Obtain feedback from industry, policy makers and society to improve the research planning direction towards a competitive balanced sustainable industry in animal genetics genomics and animal health.
- Increase awareness of host-pathogen interactions and disseminate knowledge to relevant end-users (animal breeding and production industry, policy makers, consumers, scientific community).
WP5: Project coordination and overall management
The overall coordination will be the responsibility of INRA who will:
- Be the legal entity responsible for all contractual arrangements and reporting to the EC.
- Carry out the operational technical and financial management.
- Be in charge of the operational management, the day-to-day administrative and financial administration (collecting information from the partners, consolidation of management reports, monitoring of expenses against budget allocations, consolidation of financial summary sheets, etc.).
- Manage the administration of payments from the EC and the transfer of funds to the partners.
The responsibilities of the Coordinator, the Governing Council, the Executive Committee and the Project Manager are described in Section B2.1 which also describes the project management structure and procedures. The overall management plan designed by this project is aimed at achieving four main objectives:
- Co-ordination of scientific and financial activities according to the work plan.
- Monitoring results to control their scientific quality regarding the fulfilment of the planned objectives, quality of the result, timing, spent resources and worldwide state of the art.
- Efficiency of the organization setup to support the project, with special attention paid to financial, logistics, information, coordination issues, quality and conformity to EC rules and procedures.
- Prepare the financial and technical reports for the Commission.
- Lead the planning for sustainability.
