The Future of FABRE TP
The Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction Technology Platform (FABRE TP) is the meeting point for professionals from the industry, knowledge institutes and funding organisations in the field of animal genetics, genomics, breeding and reproduction.
FABRE TP:
1. develops research and innovation strategies and provides a coherent business-focused analysis of bottlenecks and opportunities related to societal challenges and industrial leadership actions
2. mobilises industry and other stakeholders within the EU to work in partnership and deliver on agreed priorities
3. shares information and enables knowledge transfer to a wide range of stakeholders across the EU.
FABRE TP was launched in 2006 and is an EU recognised Technology Platform. The platform was successfull in increasing the research and innovation capacity and initiating actions. In 2008 FABRE TP released its first Strategic Research Agenda and in the same year followed by an Implementation Plan in. A second Strategic Research Agenda was published in 2011. Both documents have played a significant role in the development of the Working Plans of the EU Commission regarding the FP7 and the Horizon 2020 Programme. Since the establishment of the Animal Task Force in 2011 FABRE TP is not only approaching the EU Commission directly, but also indirectly via the ATF, taking into account that the breeding and reproduction research agenda is closely connected with other sectors in the animal production chain. FABRE TP is also active in the FACCE JPI which is a Joint Programming Initiative of EU Member States in order to coordinate and align research activities in regard to food security and climate change. Due to circumstances (lack of human resources) the quantity of activities of FABRE TP in 2014 was less than aimed. Besides it became clear that the financial structure was not sustainable. FABRE TP has many stakeholders but only 4 stakeholders were paying a substantial fee. For this reason it was decided to reactivate and to reconstruct FABRE TP.
The Board of FABRE TP developed a new Mission Statement, Internal Rules and an action Plan 2015.
As of 2015 participation in FABRE TP will be based on membership. EFFAB its members (if interested) are automatically member of FABRE TP. Knowledge Institutes involved in breeding and/or reproduction can be a direct member of FABRE TP. As laid down in the Internal Rules the membership fee of the Knowledge Institutes is based on the number of scientists (including PhD’s) working in breeding and reproduction. During 2015 the secretariat of FABRE TP started to approach stakeholders for the membership of FABRE TP. The aims of FABRE TP and the new structure were presented at several events such as the Pig Breeders Round Table in Canterbury and the European Symposium on Poultry Genetics in Helsinki. The official re-launch of FABRE TP was at the EAAP 2015 Conference in Warsaw in September. A representative of the EU Commission explained the important role of Technological Platforms, such as FABRE TP, in the process of establishing EU Research Agenda’s. Meanwhile all known stakeholders (knowledge institutes) are approached – in one way or another – with the request to become a member of FABRE TP. Several knowledge institutes already applied for membership. Some institutes are in the process of decision making. Some have not reacted yet.
As of 01-01-2016 Newsletters will only be sent to members and supporting members. A part of the website of FABRE TP will still be open for everybody who is interested, but the closed part will only be open for members and supporting members. Maybe your institute is already member or has already applied for membership. But if not, do not hesitate to contact us and apply for membership. It will increase the strengths of the farm animal breeding and reproduction sector in the European research arena.
The Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction Technology Platform (FABRE TP) promotes research and innovation for sustainable animal breeding and reproduction in Europe. FABRE TP is the main contact point for farm animal breeding and reproduction organisations in Europe, aiming to mobilise the research efforts, technological development and innovation efforts in Europe. We bring together key stakeholders around a common vision for the development of technologies and practises around farm animal breeding and reproduction. FABRE TP started as an initiative of pro-active partners in breeding in 2005, then continued as an EC funded project in 2006, and is since 2009 an official European Technology Platform.
